The mystery novels of Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie often featured locked-room puzzles that captivated readers. Clearly, this origin story has been honoured by some of the most famous escape rooms conceived since then. 

More recently, in the 1980s and '90s, video games like "Myst" and "Resident Evil" introduced players to virtual puzzle-solving and exploration, setting the stage for real-life escape room adventures.

The Birth of Escape Rooms

The first real-life escape room, known as "Real Escape Game," was created in Japan by Takao Kato in 2007. Kato drew inspiration from online games and television shows, and he designed a physical room with hidden clues, puzzles, and a compelling storyline. The concept quickly gained popularity in Japan and began to spread to other Asian countries.

Escape Rooms go Global

Escape rooms crossed the Pacific Ocean and reached the shores of the United States in 2012, where they found a receptive audience. 

Initially, they were mainly found in major cities like New York and Los Angeles. The themes and narratives of these escape rooms diversified, catering to a wide range of interests and preferences, from horror to history and science fiction. 

The widespread interest in escape rooms translated into the creation of a myriad of increasingly niche themes popping up throughout the world. From Vaults to Alchemists, the world was the oyster of all who loved immersive experiences and locked-room puzzles.

Dutch Escape Room History Emerges

Now, let’s zoom in on Sherlocked’s own niche. In the early 2010s, escape rooms began to make their mark in the Netherlands. Dutch innovators saw the potential of this immersive entertainment concept and started creating their own unique escape room experiences. 

These rooms often drew inspiration from Dutch culture, history, and folklore, offering a distinctly local flavour to the global escape room trend. 

Within this local escape culture, Sherlocked was one of the pioneer rooms in Amsterdam when it opened its doors back in 2014. After many ups and downs, just like any good story, our first room the Architect was launched and the rest is and will be history.

Presently the Netherlands has a vibrant escape room scene. Many escape rooms in the Netherlands are known for their high-quality setups, creative themes, and immersive experiences.

Technological Advancements

As the escape room industry grew, so did the technology used to create more immersive and interactive experiences. Escape room operators in the Netherlands, like their counterparts worldwide, began incorporating sensors, sound effects, and digital interfaces to enhance the puzzles and storytelling. Some Dutch escape rooms even adopted virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in immersive entertainment. 

Thematic Diversity

Escape rooms evolved beyond traditional scenarios like bank heists and haunted houses. Themes became more diverse, allowing players to step into the shoes of archaeologists, spies, astronauts, or time travellers. The quality of set design and attention to detail improved significantly, creating more immersive and visually stunning environments.

Dutch escape rooms contributed to the thematic diversity of the global industry. In the Netherlands, players could step into the shoes of historical figures, navigate the canals of Amsterdam, or solve mysteries inspired by Dutch art and literature. These locally-inspired themes added depth and cultural relevance to the escape room experience. The Pandemic Pivot

But then, 2020 happened, and just like for the rest of the world, the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges to the escape room industry. Forced to adapt, many operators turned to virtual escape rooms, allowing players to participate from the safety of their homes via video conferencing platforms. 

For Sherlocked, this meant trying out apps, or creating online versions of escape rooms such as our very own Marvin’s Island and Moonbase. 

This digital evolution expanded the reach of escape rooms and offered a lifeline to struggling businesses during lockdowns.
